중질유란 일반 원유를 distillation 한 이후 남은 찌꺼기 (residue)를 의미하기도 하고 bitumen 처럼 점성이 높고 퀄리티가 낮은 원유를 의미하기도 합니다. 이들을 일반적인 오일로 사용하기 위해서는 고도화 공정을 거쳐야하는데 이를 heavy oil upgrading이라 합니다. 실제 국내 정유 회사에서 thermal cracking이나 solvent extraction 공정을 이용하여 중질유에서 light한 성분을 분리하여 이를 이용하기도 합니다.

These products are primarily paraffinic and contain short paraffin chains or tiny molecules, or high H/C ratios in other words. In this sense, the overarching purpose of petroleum refining may be summarized as regulating the H/C ratio of goods for the most efficient distribution of hydrogen into products while maximizing profitability. Controlling the H/C ratio of the products would necessitate either lowering the C content (i.e. carbon rejection) or raising the H content (i.e. hydrogen rejection) (i.e., hydrogen addition).
