Observe the effects of system pole/zero location on the step response

Objectives of This Applet

This applet is designed to illustrate the followings :

  • - Step responses depending on pole/zero location
  • - Pole location change at the same damping coefficient
  • - Pole location change at the same time constant
  • - Stability based on the location of poles
  • - The effects of multiple poles/zeros
Control Panel
Control Panel

(Upto 6 real or complex pairs of poles+zeors can be added.)
Add poles/zeros : CLICK the location of poles/zero to add
Move points : CLICK one of the poles or zero and DRAG to move the location
Delete poles/zeros : CLICK the location of poles/zero to delete
Free move : Move the poles and zeros to any location on the complex plane shown
Circular move : Move the poles with constant distance from the origin (Constant time constant)
Linear move : Move the poles with constant angle from the axis (Constant damping coeff.)

Middle Panel
Middle Panel

This panel shows the uinit step responses. The gain is normalized and the x axis is fixed and y axis will be rescaled automatically except "superimpose" option is selected. If "superimpose" option in the status panel is selected, y scale will be frozen.

Middle Panel

Up to 6 pairs of poles/zeros can be shown. Red circle and blue square indicate pole and zero, respectively. If a pole or zero is moved on top of other, the circle or square will be shown as a multiple circle or square. With the "Keep Multiple" option, multiple pole/zero can be moved together.

Status Panel
Status Panel

Superimpose : By clicking the checkbox, plots can be superimposed.
Keep Multiple : By clicking the checkbox, multiple poles/zeros move together.
Status shows location and multiplicity of the selected ponts.

Pole/zero Effects on Step Response (Java Applet will help you interactively.)
