Computer-based engineering tools-such as 3D modeling, computational fluid dynamics, and finite element analysis-are automating the powerplant design process, shortening development time, and creating a whole new concept of "life-cycle software." Old-school designers caution, however, that the powerful tools also can exclude critical human judgment.
