Analysis of stick/slip by use of down hole rotation data
Drilling performance can be improved by minimizing the stick/slip problem. Stick/slip detection by use of surface torque measurements is straightforward but inference of rotary-speed oscillation at the bit from surface torque measurements is difficult. A method for determining instantaneous downhole rotary speed by use of magnetometer signals has been developed. Downhole-rotary-speed data allow unambiguous determination of the occurrence and severity of stick/slip.
