The development and current status of European legislation relating to the carcinogenicity classification of the range of aromatic naphthenic and paraffinic process oils supplied to the rubber industry is reviewed. The available analytical markers and short-term tests for the assessment of carcinogenic potential are reviewed and discussed in the context of these oils.
