Off-Center Effect of Cu+-Doped KCl Films Studied by Optical-Absorption and Thermally Stimulated Depolarization Current
It is well known the Cu+ ion impurities sit in off-center substitutional sites in several alkali halide solid crystals. The present work reports the same effect prevailing in evaporated KCl + 1% CuCl thin solid polycrystalline films. Optical absorption and thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) techniques are used to verify this effect. The measured integrated optical absorption band as a function of temperature shows that the oscillator strength is temperature independent, and yields a value of 0.034. While the TSDC spectrum shows a weak and broad dipole relaxation band at 49 K. The fitting analyses using three different relaxing dipole models reveal a continuous distribution of relaxation time and activation energy, and it yields a mean activation energy of 147 meV. The present results show strong dipole relaxation changes, which are different from that observed in single-crystal samples.
