Adsorption Characteristics of Pb(II) on Calcite-Type Calcium Carbonate by Batch and Continuous Reactors

The adsorption of lead (Pb(2+)) on calcite-type calcium carbonate in aqueous solutions was investigated by using batch and continuous fixed bed reactors. The adsorption amount increased rapidly from pH 2 to 4 but the increase was marginal from pH 4 to 8. The adsorptivity on the calcium carbonate surface modified with a 15 wt% HCl solution was more improved by about 1.1% than that on the natural calcium carbonate particle at pH 8. Reliabilities of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were 97% and 76%, respectively and Langmuir isotherm was more suitable for the adsorption on calcite surface than Freundlich isotherm. The adsoptivity on an immobilized particle was lower by 9 ~13% than that on the slurried particle at calcium carbonate concentration of 1.914 gㆍL(-1).
The overall adsorption rate of lead ions on calcium carbonate at pH 7 was determined as
r = 0.060 Ce(22.46) -0.120qe(5.420)
By-product from the adsorption was only calcium (Ca(2+)) and CO2 was not observed. The calcium concentration of solutions increased as the adsorption amount increased.
