Absorption Rate of Carbon Dioxide into Aqueous Polyethylene Oxide Solution Containing Triethanolamine
E-mail:
The absorption rate of carbon dioxide was measured in aqueous polyethylene oxide (PEO) solution containing triethanolamine to investigate the effect of the non-Newtonian rheological behavior of PEO on the rate of chemical absorption of CO2 at 25C and 101.3 N/m2. The Deborah number, which reflects the viscoelastic properties of a non-Newtonian liquid, was obtained from the relationship between the measured shear stress and the primary normal stress difference against the shear rate of the aqueous PEO solution. Aunified correlation was proposed for the volumetric liquid-side mass transfer coefficient (kLa) of carbon dioxide in water as well as aqueous PEO solutions by introducing the Deborah number. The elastic properties of PEO accelerated the abosorption rate of CO2 compared with that of a Newtonian liquid, based on the same values of viscosity.
