Communication: The covalent and homogeneous incorporation of fluorophores (coumarin dyes) into Langmuir-Blodgett films of amphiphilic polymethacrylates is reported. Methods for optimizing the fluorescence and quality of the films, which have potential applications in biosensing, are discussed and the properties of an amphiphilic, monomeric coumarin which forms mixed monolayers with other aphiphiles described.
