An indirect method was developed suitable for estimating the dissolved oxygen concentration in shake-flasks. The method relies on measuring the respiration rate of microbes, estimating the oxygen transfer rate and the C-sat value of oxygen. Oxygen concentrations of fermentations on minimal and complex media with different oxygen transfer rates were calculated by this procedure.
