Development and Flight Experience of the Control Laws in the Experimental Aircraft Program
The Experimental Aircraft Programme aimed to demonstrate technologies applicable to a future combat aircraft. One of these technologies was active control technology, necessary for the flight control system of a highly unstable airframe. This paper outlines the development of the control laws utilized in this project and relates the very positive experience gained through the flight demonstration. Most significant of the capabilities were agile carefree handling (incorporating incidence limiting, N-z limiting and departure prevention) and a total lack of pilot induced oscillation tendency.
