New Photoreactive Brush Polyimides for Liquid Crystal Displays |

Three new soluble and photoreactive brush polyimides each with a different type of chromophore in their bristles were successfully synthesized: 6F-DAP-CA, 6F-DAP-FA, and 6F-DAP-MA PSPIs. Solutions of these PSPIs can be used to produce good quality films through conventional spin-casting and drying processes. The PSPI polymers exhibit glass transition temperatures of >244oC and Td of 320oC; which are higher than those of the conventional rubbing-type polyimides currently used in the LCD industry. The PSPIs were found to be positively birefringent. The present study has demonstrated the homogeneous, uniaxial LC-aligning ability of the PSPIs: 6F-DAP-CA, 6F-DAP-FA, and 6F-DAP-MA. The properties of these PSPIs make them promising candidate materials for use as rubbing-free processing LC alignment layers in advanced LCD devices including LCD televisions with large display areas, in particular in devices with an in-plane switching mode that require as low as possible LC pretilt angles. |
