Abstract : In distillation column control, secondary measurements such astemperatures and flows are widely used in order to infer product composition.This paper addresses the development of nonlinear static estimator usingthe secondary measurements for estimating product compositions of distillationcolumns. An open equation based optimization problem, which minimizesthe differences between the measured outputs and the estimated outputs,has been formulated and solved by using the nonliear programming( NLP ) solver,MINOS5. It is shown that the nonlinear static estimator has more powerfulprediction ability and robustness than the conventional linear PLS(partial-least-squares) estimators
