Even traces of CO in the hydrogen-rich feed gas to proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) poison the platinum anode electrode and dramatically decrease the power output. In this work, a variety of catalytic materials consisting of Cu/CexZr1-xO2 (x=0.0-1.0) were synthesised by the combination of hydrothermal and precipitation-deposition method. They were characterized by XRD, XRF, SEM, BET, N2O titration and oxygen storage capacity (OSC) measurement, and used in the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) in excess hydrogen. The effects of degree of excess oxygen were also investigated for activity and CO selectivity with different temperatures. An appropriate amount of zirconium incorporated into ceria promoted the oxygen storage capacity as well as the activity of the CO oxidation. The promotion of CO oxidation was strengthened as the amount of zirconium increased up to 50% (1-x>0.5). |
