Relationship between Strain Energy Release Rate in Mode II Fracture and Adhesive Shear Strength for Some Adhesives with Differrent Molecular Structure
Adhesive strength and critical strain energy rate are strongly dependent on dynamic mechanical properties of adhesives, respectively. They also show temperature and rate dependencies, reflecting the dynamic mechanical properties. However, there is a complicated correlation between the two values. In this study, a strain energy release rate(GIIC) in mode II for wood/adhesive joints bonded with different types of adhesives was measured in order to examine its correlation with the adhesive shear strength. There was a negative correlation between adhesive shear strength and
√GIIC in low temperature region for PVAc/wood joints. For Epikote828/ATBN20/wood joints, there was a positive correlation between the two values.
