Development of Electrode Structure via Loading Pt Catalysts on PTFE/C Powder by Colloidal Method in PAFC

Inside electrodes fabricated by a conventional method, inactive catalysts exist because catalysts were covered with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). To reduce the inactive catalysts and develop a better electrode structure, the procedure of mixing the materials was changed. To begin with, PTFE/C powder was manufactured. Pt catalysts were then loaded on the PTFE/C powder. For loading the Pt catalysts on carbon blacks, a colloidal method was used. The porosities, pore areas, and performances of the electrodes were examined by a porosimeter and an electrochemical measurement apparatus. The electrodes fabricated by the new method were superior to those fabricated by the conventional method. In particular, the performance of the former, was 390 mA/cm2 at 0.7 V (vs. RHE) compared with that of the latter of 250 mA/cm2 at 0.7 V (vs. RHE)
