Electrorheology of Semiconducting Polymers

Electrorheological (ER) fluids, which are suspensions of particles having higher dielectric constant or electric conductivity than that of suspending fluids with a low viscosity, are being regarded as one of the smart materials as their structural and rheological properties can be systematically tuned by the controlled electric field strengths. This article critically reviews electrically polarizable suspended particle of various semiconducting polymers and their composites such as polyaniline, poly(pyrrole), poly(p=phenylene), poly(naphthalene quinone) and the experimentation of yield stress and dielectric spectra as well as the interpretation of data via polarization and conduction model. A scaling function, which provides a universal relationship between the yield stress and the electric field strength from the flow curves of various ER fluids, is also examined.
