Drilling maximum-reservoir-contact wells in the Shaybah field
Saudi Aramco's Shaybah-field drilling strategy changed in 2002 from drilling horizontal wells to more-challenging extended-reach maximum-reservoir-contact (MRC) wells. The objectives behind this change were to improve well productivity by providing MRC, reduce the unit cost of drilling and production, and use limited space more efficiently. Different types of MRC wells were drilled, such as fork and fishbone in both open and cased holes. Cased-hole completions allow installing of intelligent-completion packers for controlling the production rate from each lateral. The different well types were evaluated for reservoir performance.
